Two Proteins Key for Normal-Sized Brains: Findings Could Shed Light on Evolution of Human Head Size

ScienceDaily — In work that may one day correct or prevent genetic conditions tied to smaller-than-normal brains and shed light on the evolution of human head size, researchers at MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory analyzed the interaction of two proteins key to brain development.

Neurogenesis is the process through which neurons are created during prenatal development to populate the growing brain. Li-Huei Tsai, director of the Picower Institute and Picower Professor of Neuroscience, found that two proteins -- Cdk5rap2 and pericentrin -- work together to regulate neural growth in the developing brain. Loss of function of these proteins results in human disorders such as primary autosomal recessive microcephaly (MCPH) and Majewski osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism, type II (MOPDII), genetic conditions characterized in part by abnormally small head circumference.

An understanding of these rare genetic disorders may offer insight into one of the most striking differences between us and our closest living relatives: brain size and cognitive ability.

The researchers show that Cdk5rap2 and pericentrin interact with one another to regulate proliferation of neural progenitor cells that give rise to the brain layer called the neocortex. Pericentrin recruits Cdk5rap2 to structures within the neural progenitor cells, and loss of Cdk5rap2 results in decreased cell proliferation.

"Given the link between head circumference, intelligence deficits and psychiatric disorders, these findings have implications for our understanding of how abnormalities in brain development can play a role in a number of diseases," said Tsai, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and the director of the neurobiology program at the Broad Institute's Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research. In addition to leading to potential treatments for MCPH and MOPDII, the work may also shed light on the increase in brain size during human evolution.

To examine the role of CdkSrap2 in neurogenesis, the researchers knocked out Cdk5rap2 in mouse embryos during brain development. Effects included an altered distribution of cells among the cortical layers of the brain.The researchers are now exploring how these proteins and others mutated in individuals with MCPH may play a role in regulating signaling pathways relevant to brain development. "We would like to gain a broader understanding of how disrupted regulation of progenitor proliferation can impact brain development," Tsai said. "Ultimately, we hope to gain insight into how defects in these processes can contribute to diseases characterized by intelligence deficits and poor mental health."

This work, published in the journal Neuron, was supported by the National Institutes of Health and Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

DNA could form backbone of next generation chips

Washington: In a single day, a solitary graduate student at a lab bench can produce more simple logic circuits than the world's entire output of silicon chips in a month.

So says a Duke University engineer who believes that the next generation of these logic circuits at the heart of computers will be produced cheaply in almost limitless quantities.
The secret is that instead of silicon chips serving as the platform for electric circuits, computer engineers will take advantage of the unique properties of DNA, that double-helix carrier of all life's information.

Chris Dwyer, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, showed that by simply mixing customised snippets of DNA and other molecules, he could create literally billions of identical, tiny, waffle-looking structures.

Dwyer has shown that these nanostructures will efficiently self-assemble, and when different light-sensitive molecules are added to the mixture, the waffles exhibit unique and "programmable" properties that can be readily tapped.

Using light to excite these molecules, known as chromophores, he can create simple logic gates, or switches.

These nanostructures can then be used as the building blocks for a variety of applications, ranging from the biomedical to the computational. "When light is shined on the chromophores, they absorb it, exciting the electrons," Dwyer said.

Instead of conventional circuits using electrical current to rapidly switch between zeros or ones, or to yes and no, light can be used to stimulate similar responses from the DNA-based switches - and much faster.

"This is the first demonstration of such an active and rapid processing and sensing capacity at the molecular level," Dwyer said.

"Conventional technology has reached its physical limits. The ability to cheaply produce virtually unlimited supplies of these tiny circuits seems to me to be the next logical step," said Dwyer.

Customised snippets of DNA can cheaply be synthesised by putting the pairs in any order. In their experiments, the researchers took advantage of DNA's natural ability to latch onto corresponding and specific areas of other DNA snippets.

Dwyer used a jigsaw puzzle analogy to describe the process of what happens when all the waffle ingredients are mixed together in a container, said a Duke release.

"It's like taking pieces of a puzzle, throwing them in a box and as you shake the box, the pieces gradually find their neighbours to form the puzzle," he said. "What we did was to take billions of these puzzle pieces, throwing them together, to form billions of copies of the same puzzle."

What makes hacking a hot career

CHANDIGARH: Cyber security expert Ankit Fadia, who prefers to call himself an "ethical hacker", believes every institution needs trained hands to ensure foolproof safety for their systems and this industry can offer huge job opportunities. Fadia, 24, who has a bachelors degree in computer science from Stanford University in California, runs a consulting company called e-secure in Mumbai. "In this hi-tech era when everyone is on one or the other social networking site and everything is available online, we cannot take internet security for granted. Even our politicians and celebrities are not safe on the internet and in some cases it can also pose a serious national security threat," Fadia said. "Therefore we have to take steps by disseminating knowledge about these hackers and about ways to pre-empt them. In the 21st century, we surely need a strong workforce of ethical hackers and we cannot afford to ignore it at any cost." An ethical hacker is an expert in computer securities and network systems, and is hired to check the vulnerability of an organisation's computer system to an outside breach or hacking. He uses the same techniques that an unscrupulous hacker may apply. He then identifies the problems or loopholes in the system and drafts a solution for it. "Hackers are seeing India as an easy target because we are not paying much heed to this area as compared to other countries like China. In India, we have good cyber laws but normally people are not aware about them and easily fall victims to cyber attacks. "Unfortunately our police personnel are also not conversant with the required skills," said Fadia, who has been consulted by the US authorities to decode an encrypted email sent by associates of Osama bin Laden. He said the industry of ethical hacking is growing at a tremendous pace and offers a plethora of lucrative job opportunities for youngsters. Last year it was estimated to be a $3.8 billion industry in the US alone. "According to Nasscom findings, India will require at least 77,000 ethical hackers every year whereas at the moment we are producing only 15,000 in a year. Therefore it is still an unexplored field," Fadia said.

Sony's new VAIO to weigh just 600gms

Bangalore: A refurbished version of the Vaio P Series Lifestyle PC is announced by Sony. The small, lightweight design gives it an edge over the traditional laptop. Weighing just over 600 grams, the new series promises to come with new features and updated design.

The business envelope sized PC's base configuration will include a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 2GB RAM, 8-inch (1600 X 768) display, 64GB SSD, Wi-Fi 802.11n, memory card reader, Bluetooth 2.1, motion eye camera, quick web access, stereo speakers and microphone, two USB ports and an optional WiMAX.


However the main USP of the Sony Vaio P is it comes with an array of one-touch buttons that provide users with single-click access to software. It incorporates a one-button quick-boot option called Instant Mode that promises to deliver fast access to the Web, email and photos.

In terms of software, it comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. But it can also be ordered with Windows 7 Professional. Dan Ackerman in his blog says about the machine that the Vaio P is certainly one of the most portable ways to get the full Windows 7 experience we can think of.

Measuring 9.6x 0.78x 4.7 inches, the new device features built-in real-time GPS, together with a Bluetooth radio for streaming audio in stereo to compatible speakers and headsets. The machine also comes with Norton Internet Security 2009 as well as a 30-Day trial of Microsoft Office 2010 Starter.

Shipping with the device will be the standard 2500mAh lithium ion battery that is expected to run for 3.5 hours. Pre-order prices begin in the $800 range. However, Sony says the new machine will not be shipped before first week of June. Sadly though, India will not see the launch of the PC as the earlier response was not so good from the Indian market. Sony currently enjoys a market share of seven percent in India and the latest in the Vaio series available in India is the E series with three different variations in the size, said Mukesh Srivastava, Product Manager, VAIO India.

Microsoft will not support Win2000, XP from July 13

New Delhi: Support for Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP will be seen last on July 13 as the paid support, support assistance and security updates for these versions will be discontinued.

The support for online self help which includes Microsoft online Knowledge Base articles, FAQs and troubleshooting tools, will continue for another year, reports Times of India.


Windows 2000 users will have to switch to a more recent version of Windows and Windows XP SP2 or earlier version users can upgrade to Windows XP SP3, which can be done through Internet Explorer's Update utility. For the time being, Microsoft is offering support for its products for five years and extended support for another five years.

Future Air Travel: Quieter, Cleaner and More Environmentally Friendly

ScienceDaily — Less noise, less exhaust, less refuse -- air travel of the future is expected to be quieter, cleaner and more environmentally friendly. To achieve this goal, new structural concepts and aerodynamic profiles have to be engineered, along with better drive concepts as well as adapted logistical designs, and then put to use. In the EU project Clean Sky, Fraunhofer researchers want to make their contribution to solving this Herculean task.
They present their initial findings at ILA, the international aerospace trade show in Berlin, from June 8 to 13, 2010.

Flying can become considerably more environmentally friendly -- the aviation experts from the "Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe" ACARE are certain of this. In the guidelines that they compiled for the European aviation industry, the experts are calling for a 50 percent reduction in carbon dioxide and noise emissions by 2020; nitrogen oxide output should be reduced by 80 percent.

The goals are ambitious, Professor Holger Hanselka thinks -- but achievable. Since 2008, the head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt has been a member of the Governing Board, the decision-making body of the EU's "Clean Sky" project, one of the most expansive and complex research projects in Europe, with a subsidy volume of 1.6 billion euro. The goal of the 86 participating industry and research partners from 16 nations is not only to develop unique technologies for specific applications, but also to evaluate and advance the entire aeronautics system.

In its first stages a task force set the plot for the technology fields for the airplane encompassing engines, wings and fuselage structures as well as systems and landing gear, etc.. Each of these components can be put into an improved ecological balance of the system as a whole. An optimized airflow profile on the wings cuts noise and saves energy; improved engine technology minimizes kerosene consumption; materials with long lifespans save on raw materials; the application of recyclable materials prevents the accumulation of waste. The breadth of detail is immense: Materials have to be tested, material flows simulated, calculation methods refined, experiments conducted and analyzed. "At every level of the undertaking, goals must be precisely defined, so that everyone knows exactly what he or she has to do," explains John Simpson, Fraunhofer program manager and steering member.

For the first time, the researchers also intend to take into account the lifecycle of materials within airline construction; until now, aircraft headed for retirement were extremely difficult to scrap and dispose of. Specialists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, for example, developed special plastics that not only possess the exact material characteristics desired by the manufacturer, but can also be disposed of at the end of their economic lives in an environmentally sound manner. "Airplane manufacturers who had hitherto built their aircraft primarily at manufacturing plants want to automate their production in the future. Fraunhofer institutes that specialize in production processes can bring their experiences into the equation," explains Hanselka. Therefore, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Applied Materials Research IFAM are investigating the best way of joining the most important lightweight construction materials in use today, and how new paint systems can reduce frictional resistance.

The aviation industry places a particularly premium on safety -- for good reason, because the lives of passengers and crew depend on the integrity of the materials used being able to withstand mercurial pressure and temperature conditions as well as the vibrations and shearing forces that occur over the course of each flight. At ILA, the LBF experts will display a new sensor system for online monitoring of airfoil wings: Actuators that are integrated into the wings emit impulses. A network of sensors receives the signals and transmits them to an electronic data processing system. Changes in the transfer pathway that indicate tears in the material can be immediately detected in this manner. The researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS are currently engineering a demonstrator that can measure deformations as they occur when an airplane takes off or lands.

Right after safety come health and passenger well-being. So, for example, testing should indicate if a newly developed material diminishes the air quality in the passenger cabin. In the Flight Test Facility at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP, researchers can simulate the pressure, temperature and moisture conditions during a flight.

Google commands 64 percent of U.S. search engine market

Reston, Virginia: The monthly comScore rankings of the U.S. search engine marketplace is released for the month of April. A total of 15.5 billion core searches were effected with Google sites leading the market with 64.4 percent share of core searches.

Yahoo sites followed the order with 17.7 percent while Microsoft sites accounted for 11.8 percent. Both Yahoo and Microsoft saw an increase in their market share, going up by 0.8 and 0.1 percent respectively. This was the result of introduction of new site navigation experiences that tie content and related search results together within several channels.
Ask Network and AOL LLC rounded off the top five in the search market with 3.7 and 2.4 percent market share.
